Art & Science: Shift Points Spreadsheet

For February 2004 Art & Science

Right-click and download the spreadsheet here: shift.xls (Now updated to rev. 2 with the correct formula for thrust)

Our chart already has values entered for a 2003 Yamaha YZF-R6. You must put new information in each yellow cell specific to your bike.

Click on the sheet tabs at the bottom to move from sheet to sheet. Enter your bike's data into the cells on the sheet named "Input Your Bike's Info Here". Primary drive ratio, gear ratios and sprocket tooth counts can be found in your owner's manual. Measure your rear tire's circumference with a tape measure in inches.

Change the top RPM value only to change the range of rpm, and enter your torque numbers.

On the "Your Performance Curves" tab, find the mph where the curves cross, and fill in those blanks on the first sheet. Change the scales of the chart if necessary by double-clicking on the appropriate axis.

Your shift points will be automatically calculated on the first sheet.
